SCÉLÉRATES — Facing Rising Waters
What if the disappearance of a familiar world were the beginning of a metamorphosis?
Maëva Longvert conceives SCÉLÉRATES alongside Laure Muller-Feuga, followed by Samira Boukhnous and Pépita Car. Together, they create a visual, sound-based, video and performance work set in a future transformed by rising waters, where the boundaries between land and sea shift and new ways of inhabiting the living world must be invented.
At the heart of the project lies the rogue wave: a gigantic, unpredictable wave long considered a sailors’ legend. It becomes the starting point for a world in which sea levels have risen by 65 metres and catastrophe opens up the possibility of radical transformation.
Bring the sea onto the land. Bring human beings into the sea.
SCÉLÉRATES turns conventional narratives of catastrophe on their head. What do we wish to see swallowed by the waters? What alliances can we forge to face the upheavals of the world together?
Textile jellyfish proliferate like regenerative chimeras. They embody collective power, possible futures and interspecies alliances. Disappearance becomes a possibility for emergence, vulnerability becomes strength, and the unknown becomes a territory to inhabit together.
As the Franco-Cameroonian writer Leonora Miano writes: “The people of sub-Saharan Africa have good news for you: we do not die when the world we know disappears; we invent something else.”
To face what is coming is to open up new possibilities, transform our imaginaries and collectively create ways forward. This is the creative power at the heart of SCÉLÉRATES: a new myth of the jellyfish, a becoming-chimeric.
Both forms of SCÉLÉRATES were created in Chalon-sur-Saône as part of the company’s residency and artistic association with CNAREP Chalon dans la rue, France’s national centre for street arts.
A participatory creation: gathering stories, making, transforming
Both forms are developed through encounters, the collection of personal testimonies, workshops and collective making. Participants’ stories, experiences and imaginaries contribute to the writing of the project and the creation of the textile jellyfish.
Each new presentation can take root in its local context, transforming the artwork into a space for sharing, creation and collective transformation.
Two touring formats
1. SCÉLÉRATES — Land-based installation
Created in 2025 · Public space
700 textile jellyfish · Sound installation · Video
A monumental installation that transforms public space into an aquatic world.
Comprising 700 textile jellyfish, a sound composition broadcast through 50 autonomous speakers concealed within the sculptures, and a video installation, SCÉLÉRATES unfolds as a strange, teeming and ever-shifting landscape. The jellyfish spread throughout the space, float above our heads and seem to announce the arrival of an ocean that has overflowed its boundaries.
Underwater images, textile structures and choreographic scores extend this fictional world. Sound moves through the installation, giving the sculptures a singular presence and enveloping the audience in an immersive soundscape.
Created in Chalon-sur-Saône as part of the company’s association with CNAREP Chalon dans la rue, this form is the result of a collective making process involving participants of different ages and backgrounds in several cities and countries, notably in France and Cyprus.
Each new presentation can be preceded by a period of testimony gathering, encounters and making workshops. Jellyfish created locally can then join the installation, expand its presence and weave the stories of the host community into the project.
The land-based installation transforms public space into a collective anti-monument, a landscape of resistance and metamorphosis.
2. SCÉLÉRATES — Underwater installation
Created in 2026 · Site-specific installation in a swimming pool
Underwater textile installation · Performances · Underwater films and photography
With this second form, SCÉLÉRATES crosses the water’s surface and immerses the audience in an actual aquatic environment.
Designed specifically for a swimming pool, the installation brings together submerged textile sculptures, moving bodies, performances and underwater imagery. The pool becomes the stage for an inverted world, where terrestrial reference points dissolve and bodies seek new ways of existing.
How can we breathe underwater? How can we inhabit an environment that is foreign to us? What alliances can we invent when our territories become uninhabitable?
The textile jellyfish become regenerative chimeras. Performances and underwater images create a sensory experience of rising waters, explored through immersion, movement and the transformation of materials.
Created in Chalon-sur-Saône as part of the company’s association with CNAREP Chalon dans la rue, this form is also developed through encounters, testimony gathering, workshops and collective making. The stories and imaginaries collected feed into the writing of the project and contribute to the emergence of new narratives.
The underwater installation offers a collective, immersive experience in which facing the future becomes a sensory practice: accepting the loss of familiar reference points, experiencing interdependence and imagining new ways of making a world together.
